IRS Form 4506
IRS Form 4506 is the Request for Copy of Tax Return.
This form is used to request a copy of a deceased person's previously filed tax return, including all attachments such as Forms W-2 or 1099.
Executors and Surviving Family typically request a copy of previous tax returns when Settling the deceased's Estate.
Reviewing a previous tax return will help identify the level of Debt the deceased may have incurred, as well as information needed to apply for a mortgage, student loan, or resolve an issue with the IRS.
When completing Form 4506, the requester must provide their personal information, including their name, Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, and current address.
They must also specify which tax return(s) they are requesting, and whether they need an exact copy of the return or just the tax transcript.
The requester must sign and date the form, and include any required payment (such as a processing fee) before submitting it to the IRS.
The IRS generally charges a fee for each tax return requested, and it may take several weeks or even months to receive a copy of the requested return.
The process of managing a deceased person's taxes can be complicated, so it's best to speak with Certified Public Accountant to help navigate the process.
